History of Fukuoka University

April 1934 Fukuoka Higher Commercial School is established.
April 1944 Fukuoka Higher Commercial School and Kyushu College (originally established by Kobun Gakusha Foundation) merge to found Kyushu College of Economics.
April 1946 Kyushu College of Economics changes its name to Fukuoka College of Economics.
April 1949 Fukuoka College of Economics and Fukuoka College of Foreign Affairs (originally established by Fukuoka Gaikokugo Gakuen Foundation) merge to found Fukuoka College of Commerce (Department of Commerce, Faculty of Commerce).
April 1950 Fukuoka College of Commerce establishes Junior College Section 1 (Department of Commerce and Economics, Department of International Trade, and Department of English Literature) and Junior College Section 2 (Department of Commerce and Economics, Department of International Trade, and Department of English Literature).
April 1953 Fukuoka College of Commerce establishes the Faculty of Commerce Section 2 (Department of Commerce).
April 1956 Fukuoka College of Commerce changes its name to Fukuoka University. The University establishes the Faculty of Law and Economics (Department of Law and Department of Economics).
March 1958 Fukuoka University Junior College closes.
April 1959 The Faculty of Law and Economics is broken into the Faculty of Law (Department of Jurisprudence) and the Faculty of Economics (Department of Economics).
April 1960 The Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences (Department of Pharmaceutics) is established. The Law, Economics, and Commerce majors are established.
April 1962 The Faculty of Engineering (Department of Mechanical Engineering and Department of Electrical Engineering) is established.
April 1964 The Faculty of Engineering establishes the Department of Civil Engineering and the Department of Architecture.
March 1965 The Law and Economics majors are eliminated.
April 1965 The Graduate School (Graduate School of Law with the Civil and Criminal Law masterʼs program and Graduate School of Economics with the Economics masterʼs program) is established.
The Pharmaceutical Science major is established.
April 1966 The Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences and the Faculty of Engineering establish the Department of Pharmaceutical Chemistry and the Department of Electronics Engineering, respectively.
April 1967 The Faculty of Commerce establishes the Department of International Trade.
The Graduate School of Law establishes the Public Law masterʼs program and the Civil and Criminal Law doctoral program, and the Graduate School of Economics establishes the Economics doctoral program.
March 1968 The Commerce and Pharmaceutical Science majors are eliminated.

April 1978 The Graduate School of Medical Sciences establishes the Human Biology, Infectious Microorganism, Pathomorphology, Pathological Biodynamics, Pathological Chemistry, and Social Medicine and Environmental Health doctoral programs.
April 1982 The Graduate School of Humanities establishes the English Language and Literature and French Language and Literature masterʼs programs, and the Graduate School of Science establishes the Applied Mathematics masterʼs program.
June 1985 Fukuoka University Chikushi Hospital is established.

April 1999 The Faculty of Humanities establishes the Department of East Asian Studies, and the Faculty of Commerce establishes the Department of Business Management.
The Graduate School of Humanities establishes the Socio-Cultural Studies masterʼs program, and the Graduate School of Science establishes the Earth System Science doctoral program.
April 2000 The Graduate School of Humanities establishes the Education and Clinical Psychology masterʼs program.
April 2002 The Graduate School of Humanities establishes the Education and Clinical Psychology doctoral program, and the Graduate School of Engineering establishes the Recycling and Eco-Technology masterʼs program.

April 2006 The Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciencesʼ Department of Medical Pharmacy and Department of Life Pharmaceutics are reorganized to form the Department of Pharmaceutics (which offers a six-year program).
April 2007 The Faculty of Humanities establishes the Department of Education and Clinical Psychology, and the Faculty of Medicine establishes the School of Nursing.
April 2008 The Faculty of Scienceʼs Department of Applied Physics changes its name to the Department of Physics.
The Graduate School of Medical Sciencesʼ Infectious Microorganisms and Pathological Chemistry programs change their names to Regulatory Biology and Frontier Medical Sciences, respectively.
April 2010 The Graduate School of Pharmaceutical Science establishes the Pharmaceutical Health Science masterʼs program.
