General Education

In order to endow each student with a social sense, a broad outlook, and a solid character in accordance with its founding philosophy and educational and research philosophy, Fukuoka University offers general education courses that are open to all students, transcending the boundaries of individual faculties and departments.

The core characteristic of our general education program is that the curriculum is designed so that most students can complete the program within their first two years while still being able to take specialty courses at the same time. General education courses account for one-third of all classes offered at the University.

These offerings are made up of groups of courses in the liberal arts, foreign languages, and health and physical education, along with credited courses taken at other universities.

General education courses in the liberal arts can be broken down into live types: courses in the humanities, social sciences, and natural sciences; interdisciplinary courses in which students adopt a crosscutting approach to various issues facing contemporary society; and fundamental courses designed to provide a foundation for students' continued independent study in the future.

Foreign language courses are designed to improve language skills and promote understanding of other cultures while developing the four core skills of reading, writing, listening, and speaking in English, German French, Chinese, Spanish, Korean, Russian, and Japanese (for undergraduate exchange students).

Health and physical education courses are designed to offer knowledge and skills that will be useful throughout each student's life through a Lifelong Sport Seminar, which combines practical skills with some classroom lectures, and Lifelong Sports Theory, a lecture-based course.

As part of a partnership among the five universities located in western Fukuoka (Fukuoka University, Kyushu University. Seinan Gakuin University, Nakamura Gakuen University, and Fukuoka Dental College), each institution's courses are open to students of the other universities, giving them an opportunity to earn credits elsewhere.
