ジュディスさん（左）

We introduce Ms. Judith Pieper who is an international student from the Netherlands studying Japanese at Fukuoka University. She has been studying Japanese online at the School of Japanese Language and Culture of Fukuoka University since September 2021 due to COVID-19. She finally made it to Fukuoka in April 2022 and has been taking face-to-face classes ever since. She will finish her studies at here and return to the Netherlands at the end of July.

She told us with a big smile how happy she was taking classes  in Japanese and visiting many places with her friends. And also, she was willing to cooperate with the our university guide 2023.

We present this article also in English so Judith’s friends and family can read and see how she enjoys her time in Fukuoka. 

今回はオランダからの留学生、ピーパー・ジュディスさんを紹介します。ジュディスさんは、2021年9月に福岡大学留学生別科に入学しましたが、新型コロナウイルス感染症の影響で来日することができず、オンラインで授業を受けていました。2022年3月に来日の許可が降り、4月から対面で授業を受けています。今年度前期で修了し、8月にはオランダに帰国するジュディスさん。「オンラインで受講していた時は、時差で大変なことが多かったですが、来日してから4カ月、毎日日本語で授業を受けて、友達といろいろなところに行くことができてとても幸せでした」と、とびきりの笑顔で話してくれました。ジュディスさんは、本学の広報誌「大学案内2023」にも快く協力してくれました。

ーWhat is the reason for studying at Fukuoka University?
My first time to come to Japan for studying Japanese was at Kumamoto in 2019. I stayed at a High School for 10 months. After that, I went back to Netherlands, but wanted to continue studying Japanese in Japan. Fukuoka University was my first choice with its various faculties and huge size campus. If I could study there, I knew I would have chances to meet many people and experience many things.

ー福岡大学を留学先として選んだ理由は
2019年に初めて日本に留学し、熊本の高校に10カ月滞在しました。そこではたくさんの友達に恵まれました。一度はオランダに帰国しましたが、もう一度日本の大学で学びたいと考え、さまざまな学部学科があり、キャンパスの広い福岡大学に行くことができれば、いろいろな人に出会う機会にもなりますし、経験にもなると思ったので、本学を選びました。

ーWhat made you like Japan?
When I was child, I love Pink and Princesses. There was a book with a pink cover at the bookstore I stopped by, and when I opened it, it was filled of Japanese culture such as cherry blossoms and kimonos. From that moment, I was hooked on Japan and became my dream to go to Japan when I grow up.

ー日本が好きになったきっかけは？
小さい頃、ピンクのものやお姫様（プリンセス）が大好きでした。ふと立ち寄った本屋さんにピンクの表紙の本があったので見てみると、桜や着物など日本文化に関することが書いてありました。そこから日本に興味を持ち、いつか絶対日本に行こうと決めていました。

ーWhat is your favorite part of Fukuoka/JAPAN?
Not only Fukuoka but Japan is full of nature and you can experience all four seasons. Shrines, temples, hot springs and old architecture.. I love all of Japan but especially Karaoke, Purikura and the small ramen shops are my favorite.

ー福岡や日本の好きなところは何ですか？
自然がたくさんあるところです。福岡だけでなく日本には神社や温泉、古い建築物などもたくさん残されています。カラオケやプリクラ、小さいラーメン店など日本の全てが大好きです。
 

ーWhat is the good point of studying abroad?
I have been able to experience so many things since I’ve come to Fukuoka.  We express our opinion clearly in the Netherlands,  but in Japan, people are caring and refrain from being direct. At first I was confused because I didn't know how to deal with it but I think it's so nice to have such a kind national character.

ー留学のメリットは何ですか？

「さまざまな考え方を持つ人々と出会うことで視野が広がること」「文化の違いに触れるとたくさんの気づきがあること」です。オランダでは、自分の意見をはっきり言いますが、日本では、どこか遠慮をしたり、気を遣ったり・・。最初はどう接したら良いか分からず戸惑いもありましたが、そういう優しい国民性であるというところも素敵だなと思っています。

ーWhat are your future goals?
I haven’t decided yet but I will continue studying Japanese at University in the Netherlands. I really look forward to taking classes on “Japan’s goasts”!

ー将来の目標は？
日本語の勉強はこれからも続けていきます。まずは、オランダの大学で日本の言葉・歴史・文化などを学びます。日本の幽霊の授業が一番楽しみです。
