クリストファーさん

We introduce Mr. Christopher MAY who is from our sister university, Newcastle University. He has been studying Japanese at Fukuoka University since September 1st 2019.

He told us that he was happy that his Japanese has gotten better, and that he was able to take the interview in Japanese. He would like all of his friends and family in England to read this article so we are writing it down in English and Japanese. 

今回は、福岡大学の協定校であるイギリス・ニューカッスル大学からの交換留学生Christopher MAY（メイ・クリストファー）さん（以下「クリストファー」さん）を紹介します。クリストファーさんは、2019年9月1日から本学で日本語（文法、発音、文化など）を学んでいます。

「日本語でインタビューに答えられるくらい上達しました」とうれしそうなクリストファーさん。イギリスでも本記事を見てもらいたいとのことから英語と日本語で併記しています。

ーWhat is the reason for studying at Fukuoka University?
When I had to decide on which university to study at for my year abroad, there were many choices. I didn't want to go to Tokyo as it is too large of a city. I choose Fukuoka University because it is in a great location, which plenty of public transport. Also, since only one person from Newcastle University can study here, it would be a great opportunity here.

ー福岡大学を留学先として選んだ理由は
留学先の候補はたくさんありましたが、東京のような大都会では留学したくないと思い、福岡に決めました。福岡大学を選んだ理由は、「立地が良く地下鉄やバスでいろいろなところへ行けること」「ニューカッスル大学から福岡大学に留学できるのは一人だけで、友達や周りに行った人がいなかったので、これは自分にとって良い機会になると思ったから」です。

ーWhat is your favorite part of Fukuoka?
The ocean is very beautiful. My hometown is also by the ocean so it feels like home in that way. And also, Fukuoka has a lot of different scenes from mountains to the oceans, and the city to the suburb; you can experience it all!

ー福岡の良いところは
海がきれいなところです。イギリスの地元も海の街ですので、思い出すことがあります。また、福岡には山や海、都会や田舎が混在しているので、より季節を感じます。美しい街です。

ーWhat has changed since the beginning of your year abroad?
I am more confident and can act spontaneously. Before my year abroad, I never thought about travelling alone but after coming here, I've visited many places alone, as well as meeting friends and experiencing all types of Japanese culture. I have been to places such as Sapporo, Sendai, Nara, Kyoto, Osaka, Kumamoto etc.. of course I arranged the travel tickets by myself.

ー留学前と変わったところは
自信と行動力が身に付き、アクティブになれたような気がします。留学前は一人で旅行しようとは思いませんでした。日本に来ていろいろな場所に友達ができ、会いに行ったり、日本文化を感じようと旅行するようになりました。これまでに札幌、仙台、奈良、京都、大阪、熊本などに行きました。切符の手配も自分でできたので、自信につながりました。
 

ーWhat is your future goal?
I plan to continue studying Japanese. Then, hope to return to Japan and work as a speech and language therapist.

ー将来の目標
日本語の勉強を続けながら、留学経験で得たことをイギリスで生かしたいです。夢は“日本”で言語聴覚士になることです。

ーWhat is International Exchange to you?
Life is more enjoyable!! Since coming here, I have been able to experience so many things that I couldn't in England.

ー私にとっての国際交流
人生が楽しくなります！！イギリスの外に出ることで初めて見る景色やいろいろな人の考え方に触れるなどたくさんの経験ができました。
 

ーA message for people who are coming to Japan.
As I often hear in England, Japan is amazing. Please have fun in Japan without worrying! Good luck.
